Flutopia Wind Ensemble

"Play like you’ve never played before…Eyes Wide Open”

-Judith Lapple, Founder

FLUTOPIA WIND ENSEMBLE is comprised of high school wind players in and around Washington, DC and Northern, VA.  Members of Flutopia are active in their high school bands, community youth orchestras, and area competitions.  The ensemble promotes community outreach through local ensemble and chamber performances and master classes and workshops.  Cumulatively, the mission of Flutopia is to promote musical excellence and dedication amongst its members through a commitment to leadership, community service and outreach, individual musical achievement, and a lifelong love and passion for music.

For the most up-to-date information on Flutopia, please visit our web site:

You will find information on the founder, director, and members of Flutopia.  The site also features a photo gallery, and publications on Flutopia and their debut performance at Carnegie Hall in NYC in February 2011!

MEMBERS-ONLY WEBSITE:  This year, Flutopia students may view a “Members Only” website, which contains information on rehearsals, concert programs, concert resources, etc.  The site is currently available for students to view, but will be fully completed by September 9.

All rehearsals will be held three times a month on Sundays from 2:00-4:00 starting Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Trinity Christian School in Fairfax, VA.  Some rehearsals may be extended to 5:00 as we near a concert (usually about two-three weeks prior to the concert), or rehearsal times changed to later in the evening due to Sunday afternoon concerts (AYP, AYSO, LYSO, etc.).  Please review the schedule carefully on the Members-Only Website for changes.

All rehearsals are held at Trinity Christian School (11204 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22030).  Parking is in the back of the school in the open surface lot.  Students should enter through the door just under the large circular window and the word Trinity over it.

All music will be provided. You will need to bring your instrument(s) (in some cases if you have them, both (baritone/alto sax, Bb/bass clarinet, piccolo, flute), and a pencil.  Please bring a music stand (with your name) on it to rehearsals as well.  There are a few onsite, but not enough for everyone.

Throughout the year, Flutopia will have sectionals (individual coaching as a section with area private teachers and clinicians), workshops or clinics on musical aspects including conducting, the Dalcroze method, chamber music, jazz and other similar topics in which students can participate.  These workshops and clinics are covered in the weekly rehearsal fee.

As the director of George Mason University’s Symphonic Band, I am offering Flutopia students the opportunity to play in this collegiate ensemble.  Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7:20-10:00pm at George Mason University in the deLaski Performing Arts Building, Room 3001.  There is a one-time fee of $50.00 to participate in the ensemble through December.  The fall concert is on Monday, November 25 at 8:00pm at George Mason University’s Concert Hall in the Center for the Performing Arts.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating in this ensemble and I will direct you to the appropriate site for registration!
